Implementation Technical Assistance
The Smart Growth Leadership Institute provides technical assistance to communities that have made a commitment to smart growth but are struggling with implementation, building support, identifying the most problematic policies, and other issues that typically accompany a major change in development practice.
We provide communities with expertise they need to design and execute an effective smart growth implementation program. Members of our technical assistance teams are recognized experts in policy, planning, development and design.
Our goal is to help communities implement smart growth by addressing obstacles and providing guidance in areas such as:
- Providing you with advice on effective strategies for implementation that gives a whole picture analysis of the context and issues your community is facing (political. economic, regional issues). We also identify high-value strategic actions that will best move your community's implementation forward.
- Proposing a community engagement plan to get members of your community and key stakeholders involved in the process of implementing smart growth and creating a shared vision for the future of your community.
- Assessing your policies and implementing codes, ordinances, and regulations for consistency with smart growth goals including identifying points in the process where redundant reviews can be eliminated, where timeframes can be shortened or where activities might be permitted to proceed concurrently.
- Developing design review standards and design review protocol that will help achieve Smart Growth objectives and deal with prospective neighborhood opposition to Smart Growth projects.
- Identifying "smart sites" –potential locations for Smart Growth projects, and providing advice on marketing these sites for redevelopment, and for lining up incentives (local, state or federal) to assist projects that meet smart growth principles.
